Lymphedema refers to lymphatic fluid buildup causing swelling that occurs when your lymphatic system isn’t working efficiently, usually due to lymph node damage or removal. It is most common in people who have had a surgery and/or radiation for breast cancer. The lymphatic system is a part of your immune system, and it moves fluids through your body, picking up waste, bacteria, and viruses. Your lymph nodes filter out the waste and flush it from your body, and when your lymph nodes get damaged, the vessels can get blocked. However, sometimes lymphedema can occur without a clear reason. The primary program for lymphedema therapy is to control the swelling, and keep it from getting worse. At TrueMotion our certified lymphedema therapist provides comprehensive lymphedema therapy with effective hands on care and patient education utilizing short-stretch compression bandages, to reduce symptoms of swelling, and improve function. Compression wraps and stockings/sleeves can also be utilized, and low to moderate intensity exercise can be beneficial in moving fluid through and out of a swollen limb. We encourage you to talk to a lymphedema specialist about what’s best for you!
